25th ANNUAL OCKLAWAHA RIVER RAID NOVEMBER 7-8, 2009
This was a reenactment of an actual event that occurred in Marion County, Florida in the spring of 1865. Numerous battles had taken place in areas around Weirsdale, but nothing had actually taken place within Marion County where Weirsdale is located. A company of U.S. Colored Troops from the Union garrison at Jacksonville, under the command of Sergeant Major Henry Thomas, moved up the St. John’s River, where they disembarked at a place known as Fort Gates.
